While you might be caught up in the craziness of Christmas, from meeting those deadlines to keeping up with the festive events schedule, don’t forget that the New Year is just around the corner. And with 2018 comes the opportunity to make some key changes that will enable your business to evolve thrive and grow over the next 12 months. For SMEs the next year could be particularly important. So here are some of the New Year’s resolutions you might want to consider.

Resolution 1: To fully embrace social media for the business

There are now 2.56 billion global mobile social media users and platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are a tried and testing marketing tool. 71% of consumers who have had a good social media service experience with a brand will most likely go on to recommend that brand to others. So, a strong social presence contributes enormously to customer service. It can also have an impact on your bottom line too – social media conversion rates are 36% higher than the average lead conversion. Next year, do more than just the odd tweet if you really want your social presence to shine – video, Live broadcasts and your own images for social media are a good place to start.

Resolution 2: To create a consistent digital footprint

A consistent digital presence that projects your brand values across social media, online and email doesn’t just happen all by itself. It takes a focused strategy to create a strong digital presence. If you’ve never been in the habit of creating a digital strategy – perhaps you felt the business was too small or still growing – now is the right time. It’s never too early to start using strategy to set goals, decide on metrics, define effort analysis and work out how to optimise your marketing to reach your 2018 milestones.

Resolution 3: To optimise the business website

If you don’t yet have a cracking website then this might be the priority. It’s not just about optimising your website for mobile browsing but also other features such as click-to-call and ensuring that the pages are intelligently designed to provide a satisfying browsing experience (and drive conversions). We have a lot of experience helping our clients craft beautiful websites with exceptional functionality – so, if you need support with this resolution we can help.

Resolution 4: To engage with automation

Automation sounds a lot more intimidating than it really is. There are many simple ways for small businesses to automate the more mundane and less value-adding tasks to save time, money and effort. This could be anything, from using automation software to send out emails to working with platforms like Tweetdeck to automate social media. Using automation to roll out personalisation is a big trend for 2018 – this is designed to engage with people based on their behaviors, interests, and other defining factors.

Resolution 5: To upgrade content

If you’re using content in your marketing then 2018 is the year to give it a bit of a polish. Consumers are getting far more picky now about what content they digest and respond to. Video is a key tool for driving engagement, as is well-written blog or article content that is genuinely useful and shareable. Content consumption is increasing enormously so for most businesses that will mean ramping up the volume too.

Resolution 6: To stop procrastinating

Is this the year you want to improve your professional relationships? Perhaps try something new or improve ROI on marketing spend? 2018 is currently a brand new horizon and you can achieve anything with it – but only if you stop procrastinating. Perhaps this is the year that you finally implement a digital strategy or maybe it’s time to reach out and find a partner like Aquatint to help optimise your assets and make your marketing spend do more. Whatever your 2018 goals are there’s a lot do be said for the old Nike slogan “Just Do It.”
